Hounds
As predictable as the music of US heavy metal band the Hounds was, its lack of intelligence paled into insignificance compared to their record sleeves. On Unleashed, their 1978 debut for Columbia Records, John Hunter (vocals, keyboards), Jim Orkis (guitar), Glen Rupp (guitar), Joe Cuttone (bass) and John Horvath (drums) struck unpleasant macho poses behind salivating, chained dogs. The music contained within struck out aggressively, but with little substance, while the lyrics caused at least one bout of hilarity among the critics subjected to it. Puttin’ On The Dog continued in the same vein, but by now, Columbia’s initial confidence in the group had all but collapsed. Though Spinal Tap have acknowledged that their heavy metal satire was based on the real-life exploits of Uriah Heep, they could just as easily have been inspired by either of the Hounds’ record sleeves.
