On s’en doutait. Mieux, on le savait : slowthai, sale gosse du rap anglais, imberbe imbibé à la gueule d’ange déchu, a un esprit punk qui sommeille en lui. Le voilà bien réveillé sur ce troisième album, Ugly, sorte d’exutoire cradingue et hypersensible qui emprunte plus au rock anglais des années 2000 qu’aux dérivés du rap. Après l’album Tyron paru en 2021, sur lequel slowthai se révélait mélancolique et déterminé, le voici qui hurle, qui pleure, qui expose la dureté de son enfance et rend hommage aux femmes de sa famille, celles qui l’ont élevé.
L’expression « album thérapeutique » est certes galvaudée, mais dans ce cas, elle est tout à fait justifiée. Le rappeur fait dans la méthode Coué sur le single Feel Good, tente de s’autopersuader qu’il va bien, puis met en scène les disputes de l’adolescence en singeant les voix de personnages réels sur Fuck It Puppet, qu’un Eminem époque The Slim Shady n’aurait certainement pas renié. Ugly met les pieds dans le plat, est plus proche du cathartique que de l’esthétique, éclabousse tout sur son passage. C’est jouissif et dérangeant, dans le bon sens du terme. © Brice Miclet/Qobuz
