Pour ce nouvel album, enregistré lors de deux concerts à Vienne, Pierre-Laurent Aimard choisit de confronter Liszt avec ses contemporains mais aussi des créateurs du XXe siècle, afin de montrer au-delà de son époque l'influence et le rayonnement du Hongrois cosmopolite. Si les Sonates de Berg, Wagner et Scriabine contrastent avec la monumentale Sonate de Liszt, les pages brèves (Nuages gris, Aux cyprès de la Villa d'Este No.1, Unstern! -Sinistre) évoquent Ravel et Bartók.
