Ce dernier album annonce un virage stylistique que Paul Weller achèvera au sein de son groupe suivant, The Style Council.

Pétri de soul, il offre un nouveau son (emploi de l’orgue, d’une section de cuivres dans le style des productions Stax). On y découvre également un nouveau producteur, Pete Wilson, qui continuera à travailler avec Weller sur les albums du Style Council. Tout ceci donne un disque moins homogène que les précédents albums de The Jam, mais qui contient d’impeccables chansons comme l’irrésistible « Town Called Malice » (qui fait fortement penser aux productions de l’époque d’Elvis Costello comme Get Happy!!), les délicats « Ghosts » et « Carnation », le presque disco « Precious » ou l’excellent single « Just Who Is the 5 O’Clock Hero ».

Weller chante mieux que jamais sur ce disque où il semble être le seul maître à bord. Un album à part dans la carrière d’un groupe proche de l’explosion, conclusion étrange d’une discographie presque parfaite. Inégal mais passionnant.
