Magazine est l’un des premiers et l’un des meilleurs groupe de post-punk, puisant son influence dans l’énergie du punk tout en y ajoutant des éléments de rock atmosphérique. Sorti en 1978, Real Life est le témoignage du sentiment que le punk avait atteint ses limites et baignait dans des clichés. Les influences sont pourtant typiques de ce genre musical : David Bowie, Iggy Pop et Roxy Music. La différence réside dans la capacité du groupe, et surtout du chanteur Howard Devoto, à composer des chansons explosant les frontières ; mélangeant des riffs qui pourraient être sortis tout droit de l’esprit des Sex Pistols avec des arrangements planants, donnant à leur musique un caractère imprévisible terriblement enthousiasmant. Produit par John Leckie aux mythiques studios d’Abbey Road, le disque reste un classique indispensable à tout amateur de rock digne de ce nom. © LG/Qobuz
