Indéniablement l’une des deux meilleures créations de Janis Joplin (avec Cheap Thrills), Pearl, publié en 1971, est une véritable démonstration de sensibilité artistique et de musicalité de la part de la légendaire chanteuse. Sa voix rocailleuse et torturée libère toute sa passion sur des rythmes funky et bluesy et des ballades à la fois romantiques et dramatiques. L’album comprend son tube posthume Me and Bobby McGee ainsi qu’une chanson totalement instrumentale, Buried Alive in the Blues : cette dernière revêt un aspect tragique puisque Joplin est retrouvé morte avant d’avoir eu le temps d’enregistrer sa partie vocale. Difficile de passer outre ce vide laissé par le décès de cette immense artiste et de se questionner sur l’immense potentiel gâché par une disparition survenue bien trop tôt.
