Lorsque Out Of Time plafonne au sommet des charts en 1991, R.E.M. a déjà six albums à son compteur ! Formation fétiche des campus américains des années 80, la bande Michael Stipe opère ici un virage artistique assez significatif. Le groupe d’Athens en Georgie joue la carte de l’atypique (le rappeur KRS-1 ici, Kate Pierson des B-52’s là, une section de violons ici encore), délaisse son rock’n’roll frontal et déballe une prose assez insolite. Ainsi, avec les tubesques Losing My Religion et Shiny Happy People, la bande de Michael Stipe décroche même la lune ! L’éclectisme de cet Out Of Time montre surtout qu’en dix ans, le groupe précurseur du rock alternatif, a su étoffer son art pour développer une poésie bien à lui.
