Ce sixième album (le second après la « résurrection ») est probablement le meilleur de Mott The Hoople toutes périodes confondues.
Un disque « concept » sur les galères d’un groupe de rock conçu par une formation qui sait de quoi elle parle (le poignant « Ballad of Mott the Hoople » ). On est encore en pleine vague glam et même si Bowie n’est plus là, son influence est partout.
Le saxophone d’Andy Mackay apporte une touche Roxy Music sur certains morceaux, par ailleurs tous franchement rock’n’roll : de « All The Way From Memphis » à « Whizz Kids » , de « Honaloochie Boogie » ou « Drivin’ Sister » à « Violence » (qui déclenchera l’ultime bagarre entre Hunter et Ralphs, et départ de celui-ci !), le groupe est au sommet de son art.
Le succès sera au rendez-vous (Mott se classe n°7 en Angleterre et n°35 aux Etats-Unis) et cet album atteindra, à juste titre, le statut rare et envié de grand classique du rock.
