La douloureuse question reste de savoir que dire de cet album, et en référence à quoi : à ce que Jerry Lee Lewis a été (de loin le pionnier du rock and roll le plus phénoménalement extravagant et sauvage de l’histoire), ou ce qu’il est (l’ultime statue de cire de l’électricité binaire, toujours prompte dans nos souvenirs à nous faire fondre de plaisir) ?
Donc, accrochons-nous aux branches de l’anecdote : après un aussi surprenant qu’énergique come-back en 2006 (Last Man Standing), certes négocié versant pépère par une brochette de duos, le producteur Steve Bing en remet une couche suivant une formule identique, appelant cette fois à ses côtés pour le seconder le batteur et percussionniste Jim Keltner, et installe deux camps de base (Memphis et Los Angeles), avant de rallier à la toujours impeccable banane du Killer une phalange extravagante.
Se succèdent en effet au gré des dix-neuf chansons (l’homme du Sud n’est pas pingre) – et pour beaucoup, il s’agit d’une deuxième tournée - l’hénaurme Solomon Burke (l’une de ses ultimes sessions avant qu’il ne vienne bêtement décéder en Europe), trois Rolling Stones (Jagger dans une reprise complètement dédramatisée de « Dead Flowers », Keith Richards pour une version tout en vague à l’âme de « Sweet Virginia », et Ron Wood), mais pas ensemble, John Fogerty, Eric Clapton, et Sheryl Crow. Et Ringo Starr, Willie Nelson, et Merle Haggard. Et quelques-autres. Les refrains ont été spécialement réhabilités pour l’occasion, mais rappellent tous vaguement quelque chose (« Roll Over Beethoven», ou « Bad Moon Rising »), mais, à franchement parler, Lewis chanterait le bottin avec un résultat identique.
A soixante-quinze ans, il incarne en effet désormais le mariage unique du blues, de la country, et du rock, l’histoire, donc, et, en conséquence, qu’importe le flacon, puisqu’on sait qu’il sera toujours plein. Keltner, qui a toujours eu les yeux de Chimène pour la musique sudiste, âpre, et mal dégrossie, tire l’atmosphère générale des sessions vers ces instants prodigieux où la poussière scintille au soleil, et la musique qui va avec. Le sentiment premier sera la satisfaction de constater que, dans « Rockin’ My Life Away », Lewis tient fermement dans la paume de sa main gauche (celle du cœur) les juvéniles Kid Rock et Slash (qui fait ici moins le malin que du temps de Guns N’ Roses). On appréciera également que notre héros déchausse son dentier pour un duo flageolant avec Burke (le prémonitoire « Railroad to Heaven »). Et l’ultime constat, un peu éberlué, sera que, désormais, on éprouve des tombereaux de tendresse pour ce type toujours debout. D’un autre côté, c’est le dernier qui reste avant que l’on devienne vieux.
Mean Old Man : un album épatant car inutile, gorgé de savoir-faire et d’esprit mutin, à écouter exclusivement dodelinant dans un rocking-chair, une flasque de bourbon en main, en contemplant le soleil se lever avant le départ pour une partie de pêche à la truite. C’est bon d’être un cliché, parfois...
