I Am the Cosmos est le parfait témoignage de l'éclat de Chris Bell dans sa maîtrise d’une pop sous-estimée et poignante. Le guitariste de Big Star était déjà étourdissant dans cette power pop, mais son album solo enregistré en 74-75 a fait jaillir une lumière encore plus intense. La majorité des chansons sont délicieusement romantiques mais s’aventurent parfois dans des récits lyriques et schizophréniques comme I Am the Cosmos ou Speed Of Sound. La pièce maîtresse, You and Your Sister, est l’une des plus belles chansons d’amour pop. Une ballade intense et lumineuse dans laquelle Alex Chilton, son complice au sein de Big Star, prête sa voix aux chœurs. Bell est plus qu’un jeune homme de 27 ans à cette époque. Il est un véritable créateur de beauté. Un diffuseur de tendresse. Un être décalé qui tente d’exprimer sa vision « psychosée » à travers ce son très Big Star mais très Bell avant tout. L’édition que propose ici Omnivore Recordings comprend 35 titres, dont de nombreux inédits…

I Am the Cosmos est un véritable disque obscur et si la carrière de Chris Bell n’a pas pris son envol, c’est que le chanteur a pris le sien avant, stoppé net par un poteau alors qu’il roulait dans sa Triumph TR-6… Personnage tourmenté, il entre dans une grande dépression après avoir quitté Big Star en 1972. Alcool et drogues l’accompagnent dans la suite de sa carrière, au château d’Hérouville en France, où il enregistrera beaucoup, ainsi qu’à Memphis, sa ville natale. Cette vie trop courte achevée en 1978 renaît en quelque sorte en 1992, lorsque David Bell, son frère, prend l’initiative de publier ses maquettes qui deviendront cet essentiel I Am the Cosmos. © Clara Bismuth/Qobuz
