Si Fifth Dimension, le troisième album des Byrds, sort la même année que le Revolver des Beatles, ce n’est certainement pas par hasard. Ces deux albums vont marquer le début de l’intégration à la pop de nouveaux ingrédients tels que le sitar indien ou le jazz underground de John Coltrane, donnant naissance à un style nouveau : le rock psychédélique.



Si plus tard, avec le Jefferson Airplane ou Grateful Dead, le psychédélisme va être associé aux drogues hallucinogènes, il n’est ici question que d’expérience musicale, The Byrds s’inspirant des courants ambiants et de tous les rêves nouveaux, nourris de comic strip, d’épopée intergalactique (« Mr. Spaceman »), d’autres dimensions (« Fifth Dimension ») ou… d’aviation (« 2-4-2 Fox Trot »).



Ainsi le « trip » de « Eight Miles High », nouvelle composition de Gene Clark, ne relate qu’un simple voyage entre Californie et vieille Angleterre, les chœurs y sont pourtant plus aériens que jamais et les guitares déliquescentes tricotent à la limite du free-jazz. « 2-4-2 Fox Trot » est une expérience de collage sonore inédite à l’époque, exception faite des Beatles dans l’équivalent aquatique « Yellow Submarine ». « Captain Soul », rhythm'n’blues instrumental endiablé entièrement porté par l’harmonica résonne comme en écho à «Taxman » ou à « She Said ». Enfin la reprise de « Hey Joe », innovante, nette et sans bavure, n’a aucunement à rougir devant celle de Jimi Hendrix.



Album inventif, avant-gardiste, Fifth Dimension est imprégné de l’air de ce temps ou l’on avait des étoiles plein les yeux, le cœur pincé avant le grand décollage.
