Davantage que le premier album de Kasabian, Empire renferme un beau paquet de chansons fortes, adoptées par les radios sans aucune concession du groupe.
Ainsi le morceau-titre et « Me Plus One » (avec des violons arabisants, enregistrés au studio Davout de Paris), ou l’excellent « Shoot The Runner » (une sorte de boogie incroyablement entraînant). Les effets de la production, très atmosphérique et enrichie de brillants arrangements de cordes – Jim Abbiss (Björk, Placebo, Massive Attack) à la console – ne reposent que peu sur les synthétiseurs et mettent aussi en avant les qualités d’instrumentistes du quintette. Ainsi de la ballade acoustique « British Legion » ou « The Doberman » , qui évoquent par moments les Beatles du White Album comme d’autres de leurs chansons des morceaux de Revolver .
Par ailleurs, sur le morceau « Cutt Off » , le groupe recompose un morceau electro-rock dans lequel il s’approprie (est-ce un clin d’œil ?) un riff de Radiohead première période ( « Just » , The Bends , 1995). Cependant, le talent incontestable de Sergio Pizzorno, principal auteur-compositeur, ne repose pas seulement sur des influences bien digérées, mais aussi sur une conscience aiguë du monde qui l’entoure. Avec ses paroles et le concept de cet album, qui font plus qu’allusion à la situation actuelle des troupes anglo-saxonnes stationnées en Irak. On ne parle pas ici d’actualité, mais, osons le dire, d’Histoire. Un des musts de l’année 2006.
