Although Dvorák's "Dumky" Piano Trio is by the far the most well-known example, he was not the only composer to write a work based on the Ukrainian "Dumka" wherein passages of fast, almost frenetic music are juxtaposed with passages of calm and serenity. All too often, performances of Dvorák's trio are too much in the middle; the slow sections are too fast and the fast sections too slow, making everything seem like a dull moderato. The performance heard here by the Guarneri Trio Prague, celebrating 20 years together, does a superior job of capturing these two contrasting temperaments. Unfortunately, there are significant shortcomings in other areas of the performance. Intonation is chief among these problems and is most noticeable when the violin and cello play together in unison or octaves. Articulation and ensemble problems become very evident in fast, busy passages, where the playing between the three musicians is simply not together and quite sloppy. The enhanced clarity of the SACD recording only makes this more evident. In the Beethoven "Archduke" trio, the pros and cons of this ensemble remain the same. The choice of tempos is quite enjoyable, affording this work the stateliness and nobility it requires, but intonation and ensemble problems continue to plague the group's efforts.
