Velvet Revolver a souvent été considéré par de nombreux fans comme une formation qui ressemblait plus aux Guns N’ Roses que le groupe emmené par Axl Rose une fois la quasi-intégralité de ses membres renvoyés ou partis voir ailleurs. Comment en pas avoir envie de retrouver la magie d’un groupe quand trois de ses anciens membres se réunissent pour se lancer dans une nouvelle aventure ?
Une aventure qui débute bien, Contraband réussissant l’exploit de se vendre à 250000 exemplaires dès la semaine de sa sortie sur le territoire américain. Un succès qui doit autant au légendaire son de guitare de Slash qu’à la voix de Scott Weiland, l’ancien Stone Temple Pilots ayant vite trouvé ses marques sur ce premier effort studio qu’il a enregistré entre deux allers-retours à la prison où il séjournait pour possession de drogues.
L’équilibre entre la voix de ce dernier et les riffs proposés par le groupe donnent à Contraband un côté rock US mâtiné de grunge aux entournures. Un équilibre parfait qui permet à des titres comme « Set Me Free » ou « Sucker Train Blues » de s’imposer aux côtés des singles « Slither », « Fall to Pieces » et « Dirty Little Thing ».
Velvet Revolver n’est pas un nouveau Guns N'Roses, encore moins le prochain Stone Temple Pilots. Il est quelque part entre les deux. Ni révolutionnaire, ni surprenant, il reste un très bon album surtout attendu par les fans des anciens Guns, Chinese Democracy étant à ce moment précis un projet encore flou sur lequel plus personne n’ose alors vraiment compter. Et du concret qui sonne ainsi, c’est toujours un plaisir à entendre.
