Child Is Father to the Man, premier album de Blood Sweat & Tears, est la meilleure production des New-Yorkais, et sans nul doute l’un des sommets de l’œuvre du pianiste, organiste, compositeur et chanteur Al Kooper.
A la fois nourri de l’empreinte d’un album des Beatles (Sgt. Pepper's), et de son passé au sein du groupe de blues-rock psychédélique The Blues Project, Kooper, manifestement ravi des moyens mis à sa disposition, ajoute partitions pour cordes et cuivres à ses mélodies, éléments de jazz et de musique baroque, dans l’élaboration de ce que l’on pensait constituer à l’époque, et en toute conviction, une nouvelle forme d’expression musicale.
Le choix des reprises (un chanson de Tim Buckley, le « So Much Love » de Carole King, ou un « Without Her » signé de l’étincelante plume de Nilsson) est judicieux, et – encore mieux – respectueux des intentions initiales des compositeurs. Le tout est servi par des instrumentistes émérites (le pianiste Fred Lipsius, ou le guitariste Steve Katz), s’effaçant derrière le projet collectif.
C’est en particulier la première fois dans l’univers, finalement assez traditionnel, du rock, qu’on utilise une section de cuivres avec une aussi évidente, et pertinente, sophistication. Dans quelques mois, les egos surdimensionnés des uns et des autres commenceront à gangrener le groupe, Al Kooper s’enfuira ventre à terre, et Blood, Sweat & Tears vendra des disques par conteneurs entiers. Mais, pour l’heure, Child Is Father to the Man se niche avec volupté dans le Top 50 des charts américains de musique pop.
