There is no shortage of recordings of any of Beethoven's piano trios, except one: the Allegretto for piano trio, WoO 39, of 1812. The presence of this work is enough to recommend the album: the little single-movement work, written for the ten-year-old pianist Maximiliane Brentano (the daughter of Antonie Brentano and number-one candidate for the identity of Beethoven's "Immortal Beloved"), is a delightful counterpart to the Piano Sonata No. 25, Op. 79, with a warm tone and effortless polyphonic hand that often occurs in Beethoven's works from this period. The two major Beethoven trios also receive strong performances here from the Sitkovetsky Trio, which is to be commended, along with the BIS engineers, for the truly chamber-sized performances recorded at Potton Hall in Suffolk. The trio does not apply a one-size-fits-all approach. The Piano Trio in C minor, Op. 1, No, 3 -- as radical as anything else he wrote in his 20s -- gets a nervous, restless interpretation that brings out the work's innovative qualities, while the Piano Trio in E flat major, Op. 70, No. 2, is much gentler. A satisfying Beethoven chamber music release.
