Wimps

Playing solid but stripped-down, garage-accented punk rock paired with lyrics that cast a witty but cynical eye on the travails of everyday life, Wimps are a Seattle-based trio made up of scene veterans making a grown-up sort of racket. After establishing themselves regionally as a live act, they dropped a steady stream of singles and EPs between 2013 and 2015 before making a national splash with Suitcase, their first album for Kill Rock Stars. Wimps guitarist and lead vocalist Rachel Ratner was formerly a member of the Butts, and her friend, bassist and backing vocalist Matt Nyce, had played with the group Meth Teeth. They were both in a short-lived band called Ear Dumbs. When both of their groups began winding down, Ratner and Nyce decided to form a new band of their own, and in 2012 they recruited Portland-based drummer Dave Ramm, who had previously worked with a band called the Intelligence. In January 2013, Wimps made their recording debut with a 12-song cassette titled Repeat, and a split EP with Pony Time followed a few months later. Another EP, Party at the Wrong Time, appeared in January 2014, and the following August brought the five-song EP Couches, originally produced as an item to sell at Wimps' merch table on the road. Wimps moved up in the world in July 2015 when they landed a recording deal with the respected Northwestern independent label Kill Rock Stars. Wimps' first release for KRS, an EP titled Super Me, arrived in August 2015, the same month that Seattle Weekly News declared them the city's best punk rock band. In November 2015, KRS released Wimps' full-length debut, Suitcase. In 2018, Wimps brought out Garbage People, a more ambitious project that added sax and keyboards to the band's no-frills attack. Befitting their lyrical perspective, which reflects the lives of grownups in the real world, when not on the road Ratner is a web developer, Ramm is a speech therapist, and Nyce is a visual artist.
