The Ramsey Lewis Trio
Jazz pianist and composer Ramsey Lewis was born on May 27, 1935 in Chicago, Illinois. At the age of four, he began taking piano lessons. His first band was The Clefs but he would eventually form his most popular group, the Ramsey Lewis Trio with bassist Eldee Young and drummer Red Holt. His debut with the trio was Ramsey Lewis and His Gentlemen of Swing (1956). Within ten years, Lewis had become one of the most popular pianists in the U.S. when his 1965 album The ‘In’ Crowd hit Number 2 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart and the title track reached Number 5 on the Hot 100 Singles chart. The album won Lewis his first Grammy Award for Best Jazz Performance – Small Group or Soloist. Moving slightly away from jazz, the Ramsey Lewis Trio began to concentrate on more pop-oriented material. Their next album, also released in ’65, was Hang On Ramsey!, which found them tackling “Hang On Sloopy” plus a few tracks by The Beatles and other pop and jazz artists. The line-up of Ramsey Lewis, Eldee Young and Red Holt remained intact until 1967 when Ramsey Lewis introduced a new line-up featuring Cleveland Eaton (bass) and Maurice White (drums). That version of the trio lasted two years before Ramsey Lewis dissolved the group and moved on as a solo artist. In 1983, Ramsey Lewis, Red Holt, and Eldee Young came together again to record the album Reunion. Ramsey Lewis again set the trio aside for 16 years before bringing a new line-up together for the albums Appasionata (1999) and Time Flies (2004). Eldee Young died on February 12, 2007.
