Peter Brewis

As one-half of the Sunderland-based sibling duo Field Music, Peter Brewis has amassed an impressive catalog of artful indie pop that is focused, adventurous, and consistently interesting. He and his younger brother David formed the band in the mid-2000s and quickly established themselves as standard-bearers of smart English pop, making tightly constructed albums with compositional flair and a knack for unexpected but tuneful hooks. Peter's all-in-one talent as a songwriter, producer, singer, and multi-instrumentalist has been a prominent feature of both Field Music and side projects like the Week That Was and You Tell Me. In 2023, Brewis released Blowdry Colossus, an eclectic, mostly instrumental album that was the first to come out under his given name. Growing up in Sunderland, England, Peter developed an affinity for everything from classical to classic rock and learned to play multiple instruments, especially guitar and drums. A series of fledgling bands (including a stint as the Futureheads' drummer) eventually led to the formation of Field Music in 2004. As two distinctive but complimentary singer/songwriters, Peter and David Brewis masterminded a melodic and artful brand of indie rock that was widely embraced by critics. In 2008, during a break between albums, Peter recorded his first solo project, the Week That Was. After this, Field Music released a string of acclaimed albums including 2010's Field Music (Measure), 2012's Mercury Prize-nominated Plumb, and 2018's Open Here, all on their longtime label Memphis Industries. Amid band activity, Peter continued to explore other projects, collaborating with Maxïmo Park's Paul Smith on 2014's jazz- and classical-inspired Frozen by Sight and then with Admiral Fallow's Sarah Hayes for 2019's You Tell Me. Following Field Music's 2021 album Flat White Moon, the Brewis brothers launched their own label, Daylight Savings, as a home for various solo and side projects outside the primary Field Music canon. Inspired by acts like Yellow Magic Orchestra and Penguin Cafe Orchestra, Peter recorded his first proper solo album, an almost entirely instrumental set called Blowdry Colossus, which was released in October 2023.
