Louden Swain

A long-tenured indie rock combo from Los Angeles, Louden Swain emerged at the beginning of the 2000s with a heartfelt, energetic sound and a strong D.I.Y. work ethic that consistently fueled their career over the next two decades. The tight-knit band is led by singer/guitarist Rob Benedict, who is also a successful and prolific actor known for his roles on shows like Supernatural and Felicity. During their first decade together, Louden Swain released four studio albums, and by the 2010s had built up a significant audience, all while remaining staunchly independent. Albums like 2017's No Time Like the Present and 2021's Foolish continued to draw in new fans ahead of their tenth set, 2022's Feelings and Such. The band was formed in the late '90s by Benedict, David Wendell (guitar), Michael Borja (bass), and Stephen Norton (drums). Using a name nicked from the 1985 film Vision Quest, Louden Swain's approach leaned heavily on punk, though their influences ranged from the Clash and the Replacements to Weezer, the Foo Fighters, and the Beatles. Opting to stay independent, the band formed their own label, 3 Car Wreckords and, in early 2001, released their debut album Able-Legged Heroes. Over the course of the coming decade, they would release three more albums while touring and maintaining the bandmembers' various careers, including Benedict's popular role on the CW's long-running series Supernatural. The fan base attracted by the band's star singer helped propel the success of albums like 2012's edgy Eskimo and 2014's Sky Alive and they even served as the house band at Supernatural fan conventions around North America. During a prolific run in 2017, Louden Swain issued their seventh studio LP, No Time Like the Present, and their first live album, Saturday Night Special, followed a year later by Splitting the Seams, an acoustic reimagining of songs from throughout their catalog. At the start of the next decade, with the music industry nearly at a standstill due to the global pandemic, Louden Swain set about making their next album in isolation with its members recording their parts separately. The resulting set, Foolish, was released in 2021, followed early the next year by Leave the Light On, Benedict's first solo album. Finally able to rehearse and record together in the same room, the band captured their tenth album in a burst of communal energy that yielded 2022's Feelings and Such.
