Lauren Scott

Harpist Lauren Scott is notable for the variety of harps she plays in performance and on recordings, including, often, the lever harp or Celtic harp. In the late 2010s, she added composition to her roster of talents, and she is the author of several manuals for playing the lever harp. The lever harp was the first one to catch Scott's attention: she saw one in a museum in Australia, where she was born. She demanded to be given harp lessons, and two years later, after the family had moved to Britain, they relented. Scott went on to study the harp at Trinity College of Music in London. After graduating, she enjoyed a flourishing career as a freelance harpist and teacher. She has served as guest principal harpist with many of Britain's top orchestras, including the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. She has also worked as a pop session harpist and has played in musical theater shows in London's West End. Active in the UK's harp community, she served for five years as chairman of the United Kingdom Harp Association. Scott is the author of Adventures for Lever Harp, Books 1 and 2. Her motivation, she told harpcolumn.com, was to give advanced harp students music for the lever harp: "I was chatting to a harp colleague some years back that there was lots of really good new music for lever harp up to about grade 5 standard, but it was hard to find new music for lever harp students who were in the higher grade 5-8 bracket." Scott's turn to composition also resulted in the beginning of her recording career: in 2020, she released her debut album, Beyond the Horizon, on the Avie label. The album featured Scott's compositions for lever harp, influenced by a variety of pop, jazz, world folk traditions, and contemporary composers. It also included works by John Cage and Peter Maxwell Davies, as well as a lever harp version of The Beatles' Across the Universe. Scott's plans for the rest of the year 2020 included a solo harp performance at the World Harp Congress in Cardiff, Wales, and a world premiere of her new harp composition in Perth, Australia.
