David Fung
Pianist David Fung emerged to international recognition from Australia's classical music scene in the 2010s. He was signed to the influential label Steinway & Sons in 2016 and has recorded several albums there.
Fung was born in Hong Kong on August 17, 1983. The family moved to Sydney, Australia, when Fung was three. He took up the violin at six and the piano two years later. Fung, who speaks several languages well, excelled at James Ruse Agricultural High School in Sydney and earned the top possible university admissions score in the Australian system. He dutifully enrolled in the medical program at the University of New South Wales but switched to music after two years. It didn't take him long to distinguish himself. In 2002, he won an ABC Symphony Australia Young Performers Award, earning the chance to perform Rachmaninov's Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. Fung has continued to appear and record with major Australian orchestras, but in 2003 he moved to the U.S., enrolling at the new Colburn Conservatory in Los Angeles as the school's first piano student. He became its first piano graduate in 2007 and went on for master's and doctoral degrees at Yale University, studying with Peter Frankl and Claude Frank. After further studies at the Hochschule für Musik in Hannover, Germany, Fung was ready for what has become an impressively internationally oriented career. He has appeared with the Israel Philharmonic, the National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra, and the Cleveland Orchestra, where his playing was well-reviewed in that critically finicky city. Fung toured China in 2016, appearing at the Beijing Concert Hall, the Guangzhou Opera House, and the Tiajin Grand Theater, among other venues. That year also brought Fung onto the roster of Steinway & Sons. He has also recorded for ABC Classics and Yarlung labels. In 2018, he issued The Grand Duo with violinist So Jin Kim, featuring works by Richard Strauss, Avner Dorman, and Schubert. In 2019, he recorded an album of Mozart piano sonatas on Steinway & Sons.
