Seit seiner Kindheit ist Steven Wilson Klangforscher. Sein Vater, der Elektroingenieur war, baute ihm sein erstes Mehrspur-Tonbandgerät und einen Vocoder, als er erst zwölf Jahre alt war, damit er anfangen konnte, mit den Möglichkeiten von Studioaufnahmen zu experimentieren. Seitdem hat sich Steven Wilson mit Leib und Seele in dieses Klangabenteuer gestürzt, sei es durch seine Solowerke oder innerhalb seiner verschiedenen musikalischen Projekte, allen voran Porcupine Tree von 1987 bis 2010. Mit dieser Band definierte Steven Wilson die Grundlagen eines progressiven Rock-Sounds, der sich in Richtung 21. Jahrhundert bewegte und ein Erbe des Psychedelic Sounds von Pink Floyd, aber auch offen für neue Technologien war. Aber erst mit seiner Solokarriere, die in den frühen 2000er Jahren begann, kommt die Modernität seines Werks voll zum Tragen. Industrielle Klänge, elektronische Arrangements, satte Gitarren oder einfache Popsongs, alles geht: Steven Wilson scheut sich vor nichts und seine musikalische Risikobereitschaft erlaubt es ihm, die Grenzen seiner Kunst immer weiter zu verschieben.
