Von nervöser Veranlagung, wenn er Gitarre spielte, spielte er wie besessen, und mit der gleichen wilden Brutalität, mit der ein ausgehungerter Mann eine Mahlzeit sucht. Keine masturbatorischen Soli oder überzogene Hooks für John Hooker, nur stumpfer, gebrochener, brutaler Blues. Geläutert und destilliert, ohne Eis. Die Art, wie er spielte, war vom Boogie Woogie beeinflusst, was erklärt, warum er seinen Daumen benutzte, um dem Bass einen zusätzlichen Punch zu geben. Es sollte ein Sound werden, der oft imitiert wurde, aber nie erreicht werden konnte.
