The Ralph Vaughan Williams Society has been exceptionally effective in curating that composer's legacy, not only unearthing many lost works but also commissioning new music that explores aspects of his compositional output. Here, on an album that hit classical best-seller charts in the spring of 2023, the Society presents a new work, Ian Venables' Portraits of a Mind, Op. 54, commissioned for the 150th anniversary of Vaughan Williams' birth. It might be called a Vaughan Williams tribute work, and it is exceptionally intelligent as such. Venables does not simply ape Vaughan Williams but rather expands upon certain aspects of his language. He sets texts by poets that Vaughan Williams loved, including Walt Whitman. Especially interesting is the first song in the cycle, "The Lark Ascending," which sets the poem that inspired Vaughan Williams' evergreen orchestral work and quotes bits of the Vaughan Williams work. Venables' cycle is framed by two Vaughan Williams works, On Wenlock Edge, for tenor, string quartet, and piano, and the sacred Four Hymns, arranged by Iain Farrington for the same combination. These passionately religious songs, by an agnostic composer, are served well by this version, and tenor Alessandro Fisher, clear and accurate throughout, is especially effective here, as is the Navarra Quartet. There is nothing really groundbreaking about any of the music here, but the listener will come away feeling immersed in Vaughan Williams' world. The Albion label's over-resonant church sound is a slight disincentive.
