Anlässlich des Jahrestages seines 90. Geburtstags (er hätte ihn am 23. September 2020 gefeiert, wäre er nicht 2004 gestorben) wird Ray Charles mit einer neuen, 90 Titel umfassenden Kompilationsbox beehrt. Noch eine? Ja und nein. In der Musikgeschichte zählt Ray Charles wohl zu den Künstlern, von denen es die meisten Kompilationen gibt. Die bei Tangerine erschienene Box - also bei jenem Label und Verlag, den der Musiker Ende der fünfziger Jahre gegründet hatte, um seine Rechte an den Songs nicht abtreten zu müssen - beginnt wie alle anderen: mit den Hits nach der Zeit bei Atlantic Georgia On My Mind, Hit The Road Jack, One Mint Julep, Busted… Ewig gültige Schätze des Ur-Souls, kein einziger jedoch strahlt auf neue Art. In der Folge wird es dann aber letztendlich viel interessanter, weil es nämlich Raritäten gibt: Stücke, die in der Zeit zwischen der zweiten Hälfte der sechziger Jahre und den Nullerjahren eingespielt wurden, von denen viele nur als Vinyl erschienen sind, nie als CD neu herausgegeben wurden und bis heute digital nicht erhältlich waren. Zum ersten Mal wurden also die am wenigsten bekannten Jahrzehnte von Ray Charles kompiliert und da fällt es einem wie Schuppen von den Augen. In den neunziger und den Nullerjahren waren die Produktionen kompakt und all die Jahre haben ihnen zugesetzt. Aber diese Songs aus der Zeit davor sind oft verborgene, von Country durchtränkte Schätze des Souls aus den Südstaaten der USA, die in prächtige, sinfonische Orchestrierungen verpackt wurden. Egal, ob es ein Muppetsong ist (It’s Ain’t Easy Being Green) oder Gershwin (Summertime, im Duett mit Cleo Laine), Ray Charles ist stets umwerfend tiefgründig.
