Violinist Frank Peter Zimmermann, with the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Jakub Hrůša, has mined this territory before, recording both of Bohuslav Martinů's violin concertos and Bartók's austere Sonata for solo violin. On this 2023 release, beautifully recorded by the BIS label, he may have outdone himself, and the album landed on classical best-seller charts in early 2024. Zimmermann and company offer three works for violin and orchestra, all attractive, and none an everyday occurrence on concert programs. It seems odd that a violin concerto by as prominent a composer as Stravinsky would not be in everyone's heads, but the work is something of an anti-concerto, resolutely non-virtuosic, with the violin serving as just one shade in an ensemble texture. The violin, in fact, has a number of subtle shades in these three works, all of which are from the interwar period and all drawing on the basic neoclassical impulse, yet entirely different in effect. Zimmermann captures the angular lines of the Bartók Rhapsodies for violin and orchestra, the crowd-pleasing economical melodicism of the Martinů Suite Concertante, and the deceptive simplicity of the Stravinsky, which is built on a serial-adjacent pair of intervals. It is a performance that shows care throughout, with well-programmed 20th century works that are enjoyable for anyone yet reveals much on subsequent hearings.
