In this 1995 recording of Schubert's four-movement E flat major Piano Trio and single-movement Notturno for Piano Trio, pianist Jörg Ewald Dähler, violinist Hansheinz Schneeberger, and cellist Thomas Demenga play period instruments in a style appropriate to the period. That would account for the keyboard's thin sound and the strings' lack of vibrato and glissando, because the nineteenth century hammerklavier has nowhere near the power of a modern concert grand, and stringed instruments were supposed to be played without vibrato and glissando. Even so, it's hard to accept these performances. Dähler, Schneeberger, and Demenga patently have the technique these pieces require -- individually and collectively, every note is in its place -- but there's still something conspicuously missing in their performances, and that's emotional depth. The E flat Trios' outer movements lack drive, the Trio's central Andante con moto lacks sensitivity, and the Notturno needs even more soulfulness. These elements don't require a concert grand or vibrato, but simply more commitment than these players can muster. While one might admire Dähler, Schneeberger, and Demenga's readings, it's hard to enjoy them, and harder to recommend them. As always, ECM's digital sound is brilliantly clear.
