Although French pop singer Jenifer won France's equivalent of American Idol during its first season in 2002, it wasn't until her third album, 2007's Lunatique, that the Nice native made her big commercial breakthrough, thanks to the smash single "Tourner Ma Page." A catchy tune with a bouncy rocksteady beat and skanking horn section not far removed from the vibe of Lily Allen's "Smile," "Tourner Ma Page" is an undeniable slice of ear candy even for those who don't understand the language. Unfortunately, however, most of the rest of Lunatique is forgettable chart-oriented pop that, were the lyrics in English, would be perfectly acceptable as album tracks for the likes of Miley Cyrus: bland, cookie-cutter bubblegum with little personality. There are occasional highlights, like the atmospheric ballads "Nos Futurs" and "Quitte à Se Quitter," both of which make good use of the lower end of Jenifer's range, but overall, Lunatique is far too pleasantly forgettable to deserve an album title like that. Pretentious Francophiles take note: if this album were sung in English by a girl from Orlando named "Jennifer," you'd consider it a prime example of everything that is wrong with American pop music.
