Vom Wilco-Gitarristen Nels Cline, der eine lange Vergangenheit im Alternativ-Jazz hat, kommt dieses Mammutwerk zum Thema Liebende. In Cinemascope-Format entfaltet sich diese Jazzoper, mit gewissen Parallelen zu Botho Strauss ̓ „Paare, Passanten“ oder Woody Allens „Interiors“. Ist es ein Paar, das vom ersten Treffen und Verliebtsein durch alle Höhen und Tiefen bis zur Reife einer gelassenen Koexistenz gelangt? Sind es mehrere? Das Schöne am gänzlich textfreien „Lovers“ (die Songtexte sind abgedruckt, aber niemand singt sie) ist, dass es jedem Hörer so viel Raum für die eigene Fantasie lässt und durch so mannigfache Welten führt.
Entscheidend ist auch nicht der Notentext, und Mr. Cline ist kein Storyteller, sondern was zwischen „Lovers“ und dem Zuhörer passiert. Nels Cline „malt“ seine orchestralen Visionen, hervorragend arrangiert von dem Trompeter Michael Leonhart (bekannt durch Steely Dan u. a.), mit einer Gitarre als Erzählerin. Man meint fast, Miles Davis habe sich noch einmal mit Gil Evans zusammengetan. Cline und Leonhart sammelten Songs und schufen eine 3D-Jazz-Sinfonie ohne Regisseur und mit 22 handverlesenen Mitspielern wie für ein Film-Casting. Die „Lovers“ tanzen anfänglich immer mal wieder einen Jazzwalzer, unüberhörbar lässt Jim Hall grüßen, dem Nels Cline die ganze Platte widmen wollte, doch dann verstarb der Meister. Plötzlich in „Cry, Want“ sinkt die Temperatur, und der Blues klopft an. Folgen ein munterer Dreier und eine Nachtwanderung über eine Strickleiter aus Marimbas und Flöten à la Martin Dennys ‚Exotica‘. Der Billie-Holiday-Klassiker „Why was I born?“ hat schwer Schlagseite, aus Carmen McRaes „Invitation“ wird ́ne Absturzarie, in „It Only Has To Happen Once“ von den Ambitious Lovers ertönt Nels Clines geliebtes Indianer-Getrommel. Wir sind am Pazifik, der Wind bläst rauer, hinter uns liegt die Wüste. „Lovers“ ist lustvoll, zärtlich, bescheiden, größenwahnsinnig und das ad infinitum.

Albumbeschreibung
Vom Wilco-Gitarristen Nels Cline, der eine lange Vergangenheit im Alternativ-Jazz hat, kommt dieses Mammutwerk zum Thema Liebende. In Cinemascope-Format entfaltet sich diese Jazzoper, mit gewissen Parallelen zu Botho Strauss ̓ „Paare, Passanten“ oder Woody Allens „Interiors“. Ist es ein Paar, das vom ersten Treffen und Verliebtsein durch alle Höhen und Tiefen bis zur Reife einer gelassenen Koexistenz gelangt? Sind es mehrere? Das Schöne am gänzlich textfreien „Lovers“ (die Songtexte sind abgedruckt, aber niemand singt sie) ist, dass es jedem Hörer so viel Raum für die eigene Fantasie lässt und durch so mannigfache Welten führt.
Entscheidend ist auch nicht der Notentext, und Mr. Cline ist kein Storyteller, sondern was zwischen „Lovers“ und dem Zuhörer passiert. Nels Cline „malt“ seine orchestralen Visionen, hervorragend arrangiert von dem Trompeter Michael Leonhart (bekannt durch Steely Dan u. a.), mit einer Gitarre als Erzählerin. Man meint fast, Miles Davis habe sich noch einmal mit Gil Evans zusammengetan. Cline und Leonhart sammelten Songs und schufen eine 3D-Jazz-Sinfonie ohne Regisseur und mit 22 handverlesenen Mitspielern wie für ein Film-Casting. Die „Lovers“ tanzen anfänglich immer mal wieder einen Jazzwalzer, unüberhörbar lässt Jim Hall grüßen, dem Nels Cline die ganze Platte widmen wollte, doch dann verstarb der Meister. Plötzlich in „Cry, Want“ sinkt die Temperatur, und der Blues klopft an. Folgen ein munterer Dreier und eine Nachtwanderung über eine Strickleiter aus Marimbas und Flöten à la Martin Dennys ‚Exotica‘. Der Billie-Holiday-Klassiker „Why was I born?“ hat schwer Schlagseite, aus Carmen McRaes „Invitation“ wird ́ne Absturzarie, in „It Only Has To Happen Once“ von den Ambitious Lovers ertönt Nels Clines geliebtes Indianer-Getrommel. Wir sind am Pazifik, der Wind bläst rauer, hinter uns liegt die Wüste. „Lovers“ ist lustvoll, zärtlich, bescheiden, größenwahnsinnig und das ad infinitum.
