Banjo, Gitarre, Fiddle und drei Stimmen. Noch eine von vielen, mehr oder weniger brillanten Bands, die auf den Spuren ihrer Ahnen aus den Appalachen wandeln? Ja und nein, denn die Combo aus einer Frau und zwei Männern hat sich seit ihrer Gründung 2005 nicht nur mit der Intensität ihrer Interpretationen, sondern auch mit ihrer Bandbreite einen Namen gemacht.
Mit Klamauk aus hiesigen Breiten wie Dick Dale oder The BossHoss haben die Carolina Chocolate Drops nichts am Hut. Sie nehmen ihre Sache ernst, obwohl sie es sich nicht nehmen lassen, ihr Material mit Begeisterung und guter Laune anzureichern.
Nachdem sie mit ihrem dritten Album "Negro Jive" (2010) ein Grammy fürs beste Folk-Album eingeheimst haben, lassen sie auf dem Nachgänger ihrer Kreativität freien Lauf. Dazu gehören ein Cello und ein Rapper, der im Hintergrund Beatbox-Geräusche einstreut. Puristen mögen die Nase rümpfen, doch das Ergebnis ist vor allem eines – mitreißend.
Multi-Instrumentalistin Rhiannon Giddens hätte durchaus auch als R&B-Sängerin eine Chance gehabt. Zum Glück verschwendet sie ihr mächtiges Organ nicht für seichte Schnulzen, denn sie ist es, die der Band bei aller Virtuosität ihrer Mitstreiter das gewisse Etwas verleiht.
Ob schnell oder langsam, in Begleitung oder ganz alleine – ihre Stimme prägt das Album. Wie gut sie auch mit dem Banjo umgeht, zeigt sie gleich zu Beginn in instrumentalen "Kerr's Negro Jig". Das wütend-fröhliche "Ruby, Are You Mad At Your Man" ist ein erster Höhepunkt, ebenso wie das ruhige "Run Mountain".
Das Hauptgerüst der Platte bilden neu arrangierte Traditionals. Dass die Band auch gerne über den Tellerrand schaut beweisen das instrumentale "Mahalla", aus Südafrika stammend und auf Youtube entdeckt, "No Man's Land" der Jazz- und Musical-Sängerin Ethel Waters und das von Giddens allein vorgetragene "Little Bird", das sie in einer Bibliothek im schottischen Edinburgh entdeckte.
Das spielt letztendlich nur eine Nebenrolle, denn egal, was sie interpretieren, die Carolina Chocolate Drops tun es mit Inbrunst, Freude und Überzeugung. Das gemeinsam gesungene "Read 'Em John", nur von Händeklatschen begleitet, ist dafür der beste Beweis. Und einer der besten Momente eines Albums, das sich keinen schwachen Moment leistet.
