Melanie Martinez wurde 2012 als Teilnehmerin der US-Castingshow The Voice bekannt (sie schaffte es in die Top 6) und empfahl sich mit ihrem Debütalbum Cry Baby 2015 als originelle Popmusikerin. Vier Jahre später legt sie ihr zweites Album K-12 vor, auf dem sie wieder ihr "Cry Baby"-Alter Ego aufgreift, das schon auf dem Debüt zentral war. Die Songs setzen ihre Mischung aus Pop-Hooks und Hip-Hop- und R&B-Einflüssen fort, die als Grundlage für Geschichten dienen, die Jugendthemen so aufgreifen, dass sie auch eine erwachsene Komponente beinhalten - wie beispielsweise "Strawberry Shortcake", das gleichzeitig von der Pubertät und von männlichen Blicken handelt. Das Album erreichte Platz 3 der US-Charts, in Deutschland kam es auf Platz 27. Zum Album drehte Martinez auch einen gleichnamigen 92-minütigen Film, der in einer Doppel-Edition der CD beiliegt.
