Einer größeren Masse vor allem durch ihren in einem Werbespot verwendeten Track "We Are the People" bekannt, der 2010 die Spitze der deutschen Singlecharts erklomm, meldeten sich die beiden Australier von Empire of the Sun 2013 mit Album Nummer Zwei in der Elektropopwelt zurück. Fünf Jahre ließen sie sich für Ice on the Dune Zeit, das zum Großteil auf der vorangegangenen Tour entstanden ist. Endprodukt sind zwölf Songs, die sich erneut eindeutig dem Synthie- bzw. Dream-Pop zurechnen lassen. Bereits die erste Singleauskopplung "Alive" zeigt, dass die Chöre, ruhigen Basslinien, der Synthesizer und die Falsettstimme erneut maßgebend sind. Verpackt in Balladen ("I'll Be Around"), in 80er-Dance-Tracks ("Disarm") oder in rockige Popsongs ("Celebrate") verbirgt sich jeweils jene Extravaganz, für die sich Luke Steel und Nick Littlemore auch in Bezug auf die Bandoptik entschieden haben.
