This is the debut album of baritone James Newby, who comes recommended by a variety of prizes and has attracted the collaboration of a top-notch accompanist, Joseph Middleton. Newby might well have faced the age-old dilemma of whether to play it safe on his first album or attempt something novel. As it happens, he has found a way to do both. The theme of the wanderer in song recitals is a familiar one, with plenty of songs by Schubert and the other German Romantics available. Newby's contribution is to join this theme to folk song arrangements, where a longing for home is also a frequent theme. His glowing voice is especially attractive in these and Britten's arrangement of the limpid American title song, and the framing of the program with American and Irish songs is effective after the mood builds and darkens into Mahler's Revelge and Urlicht. Songs of Beethoven and Schubert make up the center of the program, and indeed one is struck by how "folkish" they are. The program is satisfyingly coherent, but one might ask for a gentler tone at times from Newby; his admonition to the stream/lover's reflection to "flow back to me immediately" is a bit stentorian. Nevertheless, the album announces an important new talent, and BIS's fine Potton Hall sound shines a spotlight on his strengths.
