Brandi Carlile legt die Hände nicht in den Schoß. Neben ihrem neuen Leben als offen erklärte lesbische Mutter und ihrem Engagement bei der Organisation War Child hatte die Hübsche selbst die Zeit gefunden, um sich zum sechsten Mal ins Studio zu begeben. Die im Zusammenhang mit ihrer Mutterschaft entstandene Halluzination über ein am Rande des Zusammenbruchs stehendes Amerika hat ihrer Meinung nach den wichtigsten Abschnitt ihrer Karriere geprägt. Auf By The Way, I Forgive You, das Shooter Jennings (Sohn des verstorbenen Waylon) zusammen mit Dave Cobb (Jason Isbell, Chris Stapleton und Lori McKenna) produziert hat, kommt das evangelische Thema der Vergebung zur Sprache. Es ist das Nachfolgealbum des im Stil des Country Folk gehaltenen The Firewatcher's Daughter (2015). Zehn Tracks legen innerhalb von 43 Minuten nacheinander familiäre und politische Themen sowie Identitätsfragen auf den Tisch, die alle von Carlile und ihren langjährigen Bandkollegen, den Zwillingen Hanseroth (Fightings Machinists) stammen. Das Ganze haben sie in gefühlsbetonte Country Music für ein breites Publikum verpackt, wobei die Streicherarrangements dem dahingeschiedenen Paul Buckmaster (Elton John, David Bowie, Rolling Stone sowie Leonard Cohen) zu verdanken sind. © Charlotte Saintoin/Qobuz
