Scott Hoying

Initially finding fame as the baritone for the a cappella group Pentatonix, Scott Hoying moonlighted with his bandmate Mitch Grassi in the novelty act Superfruit before launching a solo career as a stylishly moody pop singer with the release of the mini-LP Parallel in 2023. Born in Arlington, Texas on September 17, 1991, he started singing at an early age, making friends with Mitch Grassi when they were children. The pair added Kirstin Maldonado to their circle while attending Martin High School, with the trio cutting a version of Lady Gaga & Beyonce's "Telephone" in hopes of winning a contest to meet the cast of Glee. Their gambit failed, so they went their separate ways. Once Hoying discovered the televised a cappella singing competition The Sing-Off, he encouraged Hoying and Maldonado to drop out of their respective schools -- he was all set to leave -- so they could pursue this dream. Adding Avi Kaplan and Kevin Olusola to their lineup, Pentatonix auditioned for the third season of The Sing-Off. Remarkably, the group won their season. They rushed into the studio in January 2012, cutting their first EP, PTX, Volume, 1, then heading out on the road to support it. Pentatonix continued to work at a breakneck pace for the next decade, releasing ten albums over the next decade; half of these were collections of Christmas music. At the height of their fame, Hoying and Grassi launched Superfruit, a multimedia project encompassing online videos and original music. The duo would later release the album Future Friends in 2017. Hoying also busied himself mentoring a group of teenaged a cappella singers called Acapop! KIDS. They appeared on America's Got Talent in 2022. Scott Hoying released "Mars," his first solo single, in 2022. It set the stage for Parallel, a 2023 EP that found the singer embracing stylishly textured adult contemporary pop.
