Pavel Steidl

Guitarist Pavel Steidl is noted for a distinctive performance style that includes expressive gestures with the hands, face, and body. Also a composer, he has a large repertory and sometimes plays 19th century period instruments. Steidl was born in Rakovnik, west of Prague, on June 24, 1961, in what was then Czechoslovakia. He studied in Prague with Milan Zelenka and Štěpán Rak. Steidl scored a major breakthrough in 1982 with a first prize at the International Guitar Competition of Radio France in Paris, and shortly after that, he launched his professional career. He moved to the Netherlands in 1987. Steidl made his recording debut in 1993 on the Panton label with the album Guitar: Music of the 18th and 19th Centuries. Five years later, he moved to Naxos for an album of music by Luigi Legnani. Steidl has concertized widely, appearing in more than 40 countries, including such unusual destinations as India and Central America. He is notable for his highly expressive performing style. Steidl incorporates his own compositions into his concerts. He plays many guitars, including original instruments from the 19th century, such as a Nikolaus G. Ries model from about 1830. In 2004, Steidl moved back to Prague but has divided his time between the Czech Republic and the Netherlands; he lectures at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague and the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague. He recorded several albums for the Frame label in the early 2000s, and in 2014, he issued the album ...A ty taky jdi do Ithaky... ("And You, Too, Go to Ithaca") on the William Recording label; that album also included the Homage à Jimi Hendrix, Op. 52, as well as the title track, composed by Steidl himself. In 2023, Steidl returned on the Aparte label, recording the duo album Mozart, Haydn, Schubert with guitarist Edin Karamazov.
