Nova Twins
This London duo innovatively combine grime, punk, and heavy rock with a D.I.Y. ethic that helped infuse their career with longevity, ultimately sending a second long-player, 2022's Supernova, into the upper reaches of the U.K. album chart.
Vocalist/guitarist Amy Love and bass player Georgia South became close friends when the former moved to London. Love was born to an Iranian mother and Nigerian father and initially grew up in Essex, while South grew up in Lewisham, South East London. South's parents were born in the U.K., but her mother's family hailed from Jamaica, while her father -- the neo-classical musician William South -- had family roots in Australia. After South traded piano lessons for bass lessons, both got involved in musical projects, occasionally guesting with each other's outfits before forming BRAATS in 2014. After one single under that moniker, the duo naturally morphed into Nova Twins. Their early, self-issued material turned the head of Rob Hallett, who made their eponymous 2016 debut EP the inaugural release on his Robotunes imprint.
In 2017, Nova Twins self-released two more EPs, Thelma and Louise and Mood Swings, and toured numerous countries with the rap-rock supergroup Prophets of Rage. After a couple more singles, the band started working with producer Jim Abbiss -- famed for his work with Adele, Arctic Monkeys, and Kasabian -- before setting out on a 2019 tour with Jason Aalon Butler's rapcore act, Fever 333. That act's label, 333 Wreckchords Crew, ultimately signed Nova Twins and released their Abbiss-produced debut album, Who Are the Girls?, in February 2020. That June, the pair curated Voices for the Unheard, a charity compilation promoting alternative rock performed by people of color. 2021 brought remixes of "Undertaker" and "Bullet" by Fever 333 and Dream Wife, respectively, and live dates with Bring Me the Horizon and Enter Shikari. Later that year, the pair signed with the label arm of amp manufacturer Marshall ahead of the release of Supernova.
