Nighttime

As Nighttime, singer/songwriter Eva Louise Goodman fashions a dreamy, meandering psychedelic folk haunted by the bygone eras of 1960s British folk and troubadours. Between Nighttime's murky, self-recorded debut album, L'Age d'Or (2015), and sophomore outing Hand in the Dark (2018), she clarified production and brought her distinctive head tone to the fore with help from an outside engineer. Her third LP and Ba Da Bing debut, 2023's more collaborative Keeper Is the Heart, expanded the project's instrument palette and altered things like tape playback speed as well as lyrical perspectives. A longtime touring member of Jordan Lee's experimental indie folk outfit Mutual Benefit (on violin and vocals), Goodman was heavily inspired by the British folk of the 1960s when she set out to write and record her first solo album with only a couple of guests. Using the alias Nighttime, the home-recorded and self-released L'Age d'Or appeared in May 2015. An EP written and recorded in the woods of northern Ontario, Summer EP followed that October. Goodman then signed on with the Black Meadow label for her second Nighttime long-player, 2018's Hand in the Dark. While it was written, performed, and produced by Goodman, she brought in Robert Ferbrache (Blood Axis, Wovenhand) to engineer, mix, and master the album. It put more emphasis on her airy, spectral vocals. For her Ba Da Bing Records debut, Goodman expanded the list of instruments and participants on the still-intimate Keeper Is the Heart, released in January 2023. Although she began work on the album in late 2019, the year or so of pandemic sheltering to follow gave her unexpected time for writing and sound experiments. She eventually entered the studio of engineer Rick Spataro (Florist) in upstate New York in March 2021 with an intention to allow for spontaneity and avoid perfectionism. Keeper Is the Heart's broader palette ultimately incorporated instruments like Mellotron, tempered percussion, synths, woodwinds, and strings in addition to guitars.
