Melpo Mene

Swedish singer/songwriter Melpo Mene creates glowing, emotionally resonant indie pop with eclectic instrumentation and warm, catchy melodies. The Stockholm native launched his career in the mid-2000s and established himself as a crafty pop songsmith with albums like 2008's Bring the Lions Out and 2012's Behind the Trees before relocating to Los Angeles in 2013. After this, his music began to feature more prominently on television and commercials; he landed songs on shows like Bored to Death and Faking It and composed the theme song to season two of the Hulu series Shut Eye. Mene also co-wrote "Catch and Release," a remix of which became a chart-topping European hit for American singer Matt Simons in 2015. In April 2021, nine years after his previous full-length, he released his fourth album Vernalagnia. Musician Erik Mattiasson began making music in the early 2000s. From the start he displayed a penchant for romanticism and literature, naming his project after Melpomene, one of the nine Greek muses. Released in 2004, his debut album, Holes, fused smart, often lovelorn lyrics with arrangements that veered from jazzy folk-pop to bright chamber pop. He was signed to Imperial Recordings, home to another notable Swedish songwriter, José González. Mene's follow-up, 2008's Bring the Lions Out, expanded on his sound with lusher production and arrangements and yielded the winsome standout "I Adore You," which Volvo later used in a commercial. After self-releasing his third album, 2012's Behind the Trees, Mene left Sweden and moved to Los Angeles to further his career. Once established in the U.S., his songs began to find placements across television and film including shows like The Middle, Hemlock Grove, and the 2014 film The Good Lie. He also had some luck with commercials, placing songs with clients like AT&T and Lexus. In 2015, Mene co-wrote the title track for New York singer/songwriter Matt Simons' Catch and Release. The album was a success in Europe and the song later became a chart-topping hit when Dutch DJ Deepend remixed it. He also tried his hand at composing and wrote the theme song for season two of the Hulu series Shut Eye which premiered in 2018. Throughout this period, Mene continued to work on new material, using his perspective as a foreigner living amid the sprawl of Los Angeles to write a new set of songs that explored the concept of ego as a tool for survival and engagement. His fourth album, Vernalagnia, was released in April 2021.
