Jesper Lindell

Jesper Lindell is a Swedish singer/songwriter who broke out in 2017 with a debut EP that combined elements of vintage blue-eyed soul and warm-toned indie rock with folk influences. His first full-length, the Americana-flavored Everyday Dreams, appeared two years later on the U.S.-based Alive Records label. In 2020 Lindell fell ill and underwent a kidney transplant. The ordeal helped inspire the affirmational tone on his sophomore album, 2022's Twilights. While touring heavily in support of it, he continued to write and in 2023 released an EP, Windows, Vol. 1. A native of Ludvika, a working-class city in the middle of Sweden, Lindell's musical journey began in his early teens when, while recovering from a broken leg, his older brother taught him some basic chords on acoustic guitar. He soon abandoned soccer (the source of the injury) and became enamored of music, playing guitar and bass and fronting rock bands like Almost Nature and later the Gothenburg roots rock band King Harvest. Eventually striking out on his own, Lindell signed with BMG and teamed up with producer Benkt Söderberg, father of acclaimed Swedish indie folk sister duo First Aid Kit, to record his first EP, 2017's Little Less Blue. Featuring harmonies from the two Söderberg sisters, Klara and Johanna, Lindell's soulful retro-rock sound struck a chord with Swedish audiences, especially the single "Moving Slow," and he spent the next year or two touring the country and sharing stages with American artists like Justin Townes Earle and Andrew Combs. For his full-length debut, Lindell collaborated with Blues Pills bassist Zack Anderson, emerging with a set that pitted bluesy rock against horn-laden Van Morrison-style soul. By this point his status with BMG had begun to deteriorate and he soon left the label to release 2019's Everyday Dreams himself. With the success of the single "Whatever Happens," the album did well in Sweden and was picked up by U.S. label Alive Records for broader release. During the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown, Lindell was afflicted with congenital kidney disease, becoming very ill and requiring a kidney transplant. While convalescing at his childhood home in Ludvika, he wrote the poignant songs that would become his second album, 2022's uplifting Twilights. Playing with a six-piece band, he began touring relentlessly through Scandinavia and parts of Europe. By 2023, Lindell had written a new batch of songs which appeared in 2023 as the Windows, Vol. 1 EP. During this period, he and his touring band also found time to record an album supporting Swedish singer Magnus Carlson while also completing work on their own next album.
