Insect O.

German producer Insect O. creates a strain of dub techno with a warm analog feel. Inspired both by classic Detroit techno and the Berlin Basic Channel sound, his chilled-out, hypnotic tracks make the perfect soundtrack for armchair astral travelers. Born Oliver Hartmann in Dresden (not to be confused with the metal guitarist and vocalist from Rüsselsheim), he developed a passion for electronic music in his teens through listening to a popular early-'90s radio show. He started buying records and began making his own music at the age of 14. In the late '90s he became resident DJ at the underground Flugzeugwerft nightclub, and in 1998 launched his own record label, Etui. The label became a major destination for dub techno heads, putting out releases by the likes of Mentalic, Alec Troniq, and Monomood. The label also issued a long string of his own EPs, two of the biggest being 2012's "Birds Over Hong Kong" and the following year's "Bondi Dub." His own music was heavily inspired by his love of traveling all over the world to far-flung destinations in Asia, Australia, and South America. He also released tracks on Atypical Farm, Etoka Shapes, and Biotop, and collaborated with many artists including Pro.Ton, Matschiste, Alex Carbo, and Australia's Echo Inspectors, putting out the "Bourne Dub" and "Bribie Dub" singles through their Primary Colours imprint. In 2018 Insect O. released his debut album, Atacama. Inspired by a long road trip through the famous desert of Chile, Bolivia, and Peru, it had a classic, smooth dub techno sound in keeping with the rest of his oeuvre.
