Auteur de l'un des succès les plus importants de l'année 2016 avec son premier album One Track Mind, et ce après sa révélation au grand public par le duo-hommage « Marvin Gaye » avec Meghan Trainor, le jeune Charlie Puth était attendu au tournant, deux ans après, pour son nouveau long-format que voici, Voicenotes.
Annoncé par une nouvelle salve de hits, en l'occurrence « Attention », un titre fortement teinté de R&B et « How Long », dans un style empruntant au disco avec sa basse ronde, sa guitare funk, ses clochettes, ses choeurs et ses claquements de mains, le projet semblait s'orienter vers un programme particulièrement dansant, d'autant que le troisième extrait « Done for Me », avec la participation de Kehlani, s'aventurait dans ce registre rétro revu par une production moderne.
L'écoute des treize morceaux de Voicenotes confirme cette tendance à la dance et à la soul urbaine avec une entrée en matière aussi rythmée que « The Way I Am » et des compositions à l'avenant comme « LA Girls », la ballade « Patient », avec son piano électrique et sa boîte à rythmes tout droit sortis des années 1980 ou le duo lascif « If You Leave Me Now », écrit avec Tobias Jesso Jr. et chanté avec le groupe vocal Boyz II Men, particulièrement connoté à l'âge d'or du R&B de cette période.
Passé cette première partie chargée en nouveaux tubes potentiels, l'album entièrement composé et produit par le jeune prodige de la pop et de la soul blanche atteint une vitesse de croisière avec des tentatives moins efficaces sur « Boy », « Slow It Down » ou « Through It All », bien que creusant dans le même sillon de la « blue-eyed soul ». Enfin, Voicenotes, à l'affichage clairement rétro, réserve une dernière surprise avec la participation de l'idole du soft rock des années 1970, James Taylor, faisant figure de vétéran sur « Change », une ballade acoustique mi-folk mi-soul appuyant sur la sonorité nostalgique de l'ensemble.
