Parmi les maîtres d’œuvre de ce cinquième album de l’Anglaise Jessie Ware, on note la présence de Stuart Price, mythique producteur de Confessions on a Dance Floor de Madonna. Un détail qui en dit long sur la couleur générale de ce That ! Feels Good !, à la fabrication impeccable et aux accents disco-funk aussi scintillants que dramatiques. Avec sa voix puissante, cette nouvelle icône LGBTQI+ remplit son rôle de diva à la perfection, en chantant avant tout la liberté – la liberté comme étendard politique. Dans That ! Feels Good !, elle assène que « le plaisir est un droit » (« Pleasure is a right »), sur une rythmique que n’aurait pas reniée Prince. Même son de cloche sur Free Yourself, avec en prime des notes de piano appuyées typiques de la handbag house des années 1990. Dans un mélange singulier de sophistication et d’assurance, Jessie Ware balaie toutes les inhibitions sur son passage, y compris sexuelles : on sera troublé par l’érotisme de These Lips, tandis que dans Shake the Bottle, elle dévoile la recette pour lui procurer un orgasme. Euphorique et hédoniste, cet album est aussi un autoportrait en pointillé, comme le prouve le morceau Pearls, dans lequel Ware se définit à la fois comme « lover, freak and mother ». Entre les clins d’œil aux années 1970 et les références aux années 1990, That ! Feels Good ! brasse de nombreux genres musicaux festifs de la fin du XXe siècle, en flirtant parfois avec le pastiche.
