The title is Solid Gold, but Miles Miller's debut is more like amber—classic songs that could have been recorded any time in the past 50 years. That's a hearty compliment, as Miller's work does not sound dusty or retro, just familiar. Until now known as a drummer for Tyler Childers and Sturgill Simpson—who produced the record—Miller was discovered by Nashville super-producer Dave Cobb while still in high school and posting drumming covers on YouTube. However, he also plays guitar, sings and knows his way around a melody. The excellent "Don't Give Away Love" features good-timin’ saloon piano and a Bellamy Brothers ease, while the vulnerable "I Wish" offers a jewel-box piano melody and slow-hand guitar as Miller sings with a soft Kentucky twang about regrets and missing an ex: "I wish I could still hear your footsteps/ Even as you're walking away … If I came over for no reason/ Would you answer the door ... would you love me anymore?" Miller has said the record tracks the "cycle of a love story that crumbles" and that "It’s an entire story essentially about wanting to get back to the love you have, realizing you shouldn’t give it away, to love leaving, hitting the road because of it leaving, feeling love on the road, love from home, to realizing you need to keep walking and wish them well." It's something he can't live with or without on "A Feeling Called Lonesome," a gentle weeping-steel ballad that wonders, "Why do I bother/ Give up my heart/ Give up my freedom/ Have it all torn apart." Miller—whose vocal tone is so round and warm—is a singer-songwriter in the vein of Jerry Jeff Walker, Mac Davis and Jim Messina, but with a deep appreciation for The Band and classic Southern rock, as shown on "Seeing Clear" and the Allman-like slide guitar of the totally mellow title track. It makes Solid Gold a great summer record for lazy days on the lake or river; forget yacht rock, this is pontoon country: sunny and feel-good, even when it's about heartache. The ballad “My Sanity” sounds crystalline. Cosmic country tune “Highway Shoes'' stomps and blazes with red-hot guitar before sliding into a jam-band stew of jazz and funk and blues and mountain music. And "In a Daze'' bears an unmistakable Highwaymen vibe, even if Miller’s a lover as much as he is an outlaw. © Shelly Ridenour/Qobuz
