Après avoir écumé la côte ouest avec ses Clams, Shannon Shaw est partie à Nashville comme Dusty Springfield en 1968. Clin d’œil assuré à Dusty in Memphis, ce premier chapitre en solitaire marque le début d’une émancipation. Shannon & The Clams, c’est ce groupe d’Oakland, Californie, autant influencé par Primus que Devo, Missing Person ou Roy Orbison, maîtrisant l’art du déguisement, tournant des courts-métrages absurdes, invitant des journalistes dans leurs piaules exiguës et signés chez Burger Records. C’est une poésie écrite de punk, rockabilly, doo-wop et garage. Plus punk, plus débraillé, elle a aussi rejoint Hunx and His Punx à la demande de Seth Bogart. Seule, Shannon s’offre un autre décor.
Sa voix éraillée épouse la soul doo-wop des grands girl bands, Ronettes, Shirelles ou Shangri-Las, déjà en germe dans Onion des Clams produit par Dan Auerbach. Et si Shannon tient encore la basse, elle prend la place centrale. Fan des Clams, le chanteur des Black Keys a invité Shannon en un coup de fil dans son studio Easy Eye Sound. La blonde plantureuse s’est envolée, six morceaux en poche, rejoindre une clique de musiciens surdiplômés, histoire de réaliser le destin qui lui était promis. Les vieux ont enregistré avec Aretha, Elvis ou Dusty... De quoi la faire rougir. De quoi, surtout, rugir ses amours brisées et mélancoliques, faire péter les coutures de sa voix féline et son charisme de grande chanteuse. Mélodies scintillantes des sixties, arrangements cinétiques d’un bon James Bond, Auerbach a sculpté un album sur mesure. Classe et classique. Avec des touches légères de glockenspiel, vibraphones, carillons et une odeur douce de renfermé rétro.
