D’abord sorti en 22 disques 78T sous étiquette Le Chant du monde — label français créé en 1938, qui a édité bon nombre d’enregistrements russes —, ce Boris Godounov de 1949, sous la direction de Nikolai Golovanov avec la basse Alexander Pirogov (1899-1964) dans le rôle de Boris, a été réédité en avril 2002 par Preiser (pistes 1 à 19) dans un très bon report numérique. S'y ajoute un bonus astucieux : les scènes du rôle de Boris (pistes 20 à 30) enregistrées en 1948 par Mark Reizen (1895-1992) avec la même superbe équipe (chœur, orchestre et plâteau de chanteurs) du Théâtre du Bolchoi toujours placée sous la direction captivante du chef russe. Pour ceux qui ne connaissent l’opéra qu’à travers des versions plus modernes, ces enregistrements Golovanov seront une révélation. La qualité de l'interprétation vaut la peine de sacrifier à la haute définition, d'autant plus que le transfert par Preiser est vraiment miraculeux surtout quand on sait qu'il est issu de repiquages de captures sonores monophoniques. La version Pirogov/Golovanov est très souvent considérée comme étant à ce jour le meilleur Boris Godounov jamais enregistré. Pour certains, Pirogov reste même insurpassable dans ce rôle. Profondément dramatique dans la douleur qu'il exprime, son chant à la fois éloquent, puissant et simple nous fait vivre intensément le délire de Boris et sa descente aux enfers mais jamais dans l'excès comme peut l'être celui de Chaliapine ou de Boris Christoff. Le reste de la distribution est de haute volée, comme le merveilleux Pimen si expressif de Maxim Mikhailov, l'incomparable et bouleversant Simpleton d'Ivan Kozlovsky, le Grigori/Dimitri aussi excellent que passionné de Georgi Nelepp ou encore les remarquables Shuiski de Nikander Kanaiev et Shechelkalov du grand baryton Ilya Bogdanov. Par ailleurs, la direction inspirée, là aussi sans excès interprétatifs, de Golovanov est en constante adéquation. Si le légendaire Mark Reizen restera à jamais une grande basse intouchable, au chant impeccable — en 1948, il est au sommet de son art —, son Boris est cependant moins douloureusement expressif que celui de Pirogov, ce qui le préserve plus facilement de l'écueil de la surinterprétation. À chacun d'en juger par lui-même. © Qobuz / GG
