Van Morrison a grandi avec le skiffle – oui, à 77 ans, c’est possible. Le skiffle, c'est cet ancêtre de la pop music qui, dans l’Angleterre des années 50 et début 60, a permis à de jeunes musiciens de se faire les dents sur les musiques traditionnelles américaines, folk, jazz et blues. Les groupes de skiffle jouaient sur des instruments acoustiques de fortune, guitares, banjos et planches à laver, avec de grands sourires et les cheveux bien dégagés autour des oreilles. Très populaire à l’époque, le genre a vite été balayé par l’explosion de la pop (avant les Beatles, John Lennon a eu son groupe de skiffle, les Quarrymen), mais il est resté dans les mémoires comme une musique d’apprentissage et d’un âge d’or révolu.
En 1998, Van Morrison honorait le skiffle sur un album live avec deux héros du genre, Lonnie Donegan et Chris Barber (The Skiffle Sessions, live in Belfast). Il y retourne aujourd’hui en studio et en groupe, sur ce Moving On Skiffle comme un bain de jouvence. Les 23 titres de l’album sont tous des reprises de chansons qui font partie du patrimoine folk et blues américain. Van Morrison ne prétend rien révolutionner ici. Sur des instrumentations guillerettes et acoustiques, il célèbre l’éternelle jeunesse de chansons qu’on entonnera encore autour d’un feu de camp dans cinquante ans. Tel Dylan revisitant le répertoire de Sinatra sur Shadows in the Night et Fallen Angels au milieu des années 2010, Van Morrison feuillette l’album musical de ses jeunes années.
