On l'attendait depuis (trop) longtemps : après avoir brillamment interprété un grand nombre de fois les oeuvres du compositeur américain Eric Whitacre, il fallait bien que le choeur de chambre Voces8 lui consacre un disque entier. C'est désormais chose faite avec Home qui dessine le portrait musical de Whitacre et toute l'évolution de son langage. La sélection regroupe ici ses oeuvres de jeunesse, de sa toute première composition Go, Lovely Rose à d'autres pièces finalisées quelques mois à peine avant l'enregistrement. En pièce centrale, The Sacred Veil s'impose probablement comme l'une des plus grandes oeuvres vocales de notrce temps, tant par la déchirante lumière qui s'en dégage que par sa bouleversante thématique - Eric Whitacre y livre ici sans fausse pudeur le récit du décès de la femme de son ami. Difficile, comme toujours, de trouver quelque chose à redire aux parutions de Voces8 : le timbre est unique, réaffirmant l'humble force du collectif au dela de la dissonnance des voies (voix) individualistes. La pureté des souffles, la caresse des mélismes, la prise de son au plus près des corps nous plongent dans un apaisant bain d'humanité. Si les Voces8 excellent dans la musique ancienne, ils deviennent quasiment imbattables dans le répertoire contemporain, et laissent dès maintenant un cadeau inestimable pour les générations futures. © Pierre Lamy/Qobuz
