Principal rival de Haendel à Londres au début du XVIIIe siècle, Giovanni Battista Bononcini ne connaît pas la postérité de son collègue allemand. Pourtant, ses Griselda, Crispo et Astarto connurent d’éclatants succès. L’impitoyable Temps n’a retenu qu’Haendel dans ses filets, reléguant les opéras de Bononcini dans l’ombre.
Son Polifemo créé en 1702 à la cour de Prusse n’est pas un opéra stricto sensu, mais une vaste serenata durant une heure et demie. Son librettiste a eu l’idée de mélanger deux intrigues : l’histoire d’Acis et Galathée jalousée par le cyclope Polyphème et la mésaventure de Scylla et Glaucus aimé aussi de Circé, soit deux triangles amoureux réunis en un seul ouvrage. Dans cette partition, Bononcini n’a pas grand-chose à envier à son rival allemand grâce à une inventivité constante et à un grand sens mélodique.
Ressuscité tout d’abord en allemand en 1944, ce Polifemo a été enregistré en 1987 par René Jacobs et représenté depuis en version scénique. Cette nouvelle réalisation a été enregistrée lors des concerts présentés dans l’orangerie du château de Sans-Souci, à Postdam, en juin 2019 sous la direction de Dorothee Oberlinger, à la tête de l’Ensemble 1700 qu’elle a fondé en 2002 et, par ailleurs, directrice du Festival de Potsdam. On ne peut que souligner la qualité de cette exécution, grâce à une distribution vocale irréprochable soutenue par une approche instrumentale et stylistique extrêmement soignée. © François Hudry/Qobuz
